Message from the Head of School

Change and Decision-Making

You never step into the same river twice. All of the cells in our bodies are replaced every seven years.

Change is the Law of the Universe.

Schools are about change, partly because they are full of the young who, no matter what else they might do, demand that we respond to them. Schools demand change because they are organic, responsive institutions with one ear to the world of learning and another attuned tot heir students' voices. Bromley Brook School was designed intentionally with girls in mind. It is for girls, about girls, and responds to girls' individual needs. Within that solid framework, the small changes that we make have a huge impact on our student's quality of life, so we want to be very sure that before any decision is made, it is carefully considered by the adults who will administer it.

I want to invite you to become part of our decision-making process. Do not hesitate to call or email your ideas. We may not adopt them all, but we want our parents to feel that they are partners in our process, that you have a seat that the table every Friday at our Senior Leadership Team Meeting.

Community Life
Our winter recreational program includes basketball, yoga, tennis, dance, skiing, snowboarding, and horseback riding. Other events this month included a basketball game at Green Mountain College, ice hockey game at UNH, full moon snowshoeing, and an all-school bowling outing. Next week we will have the first of our monthly "formal" dinners with featured guest speakers. This month we welcome the Rev. Matthew Laney, a minister at Manchester's First Congregational Church. His ministry has been focused on teen issues and his speech is entitled "Girl Power." In March we welcome author John Irving.

News from Dining Services
My name is Nora Heinsohn and I have the best job here! I am the director of Dining Services. In this capacity I get to meet all of your daughters, plan their meals, work with them on the food committee and plan events for them. We offer healthy choices and a varied selection of foods to choose from. Breakfast offers a fresh fruit platter, juices and a bowl of fruit each morning, in addition to the typical breakfast items. We offer turkey sausage and meatless sausage on the menu. There are always whole grain breads. Lunch always has a homemade soup and a full salad bar, two main entrée items and always peanut butter and jelly for the die hard fans. We offer at least one fat free salad dressing and fruit is available at lunch as well. Dinner consists of two main entree selections as well, one protein and one vegetarian, just as at lunch. In addition to the vegetable and starch sides, we offer a salad bar or, occasionally, prepared salads, freshly baked bread, fresh fruit and a dessert.

We use many techniques to meet our goal of providing tasteful, healthy meals for your daughters. We do not deep fry any thing. We use light oils in our cooking and vinaigrettes. There is always a fat free dressing option on our salad bar each day and we serve only fat free or 2% milk in the dining room. These are just of the few of the steps we take to ensure that your daughters are eating well balanced, healthful meals.

It is truly a pleasure to plan and prepare meals for your daughter. Please feel free to come see me whenever you are on campus!

A quick note about Academics
Two new classes are being offered this semester: Personal Finance and Culinary Arts

The Personal Finance class is being taught by Pat Rubano and will cover issues of personal finance, checking accounts, responsible credit card use, and budgeting.

The Culinary Arts class is being taught by Tracy Crelin, a chef from Dining Services and a Johnson & Wales graduate. She is teaching cleanliness, safety, recipe use and meal (e.g. delicious strawberry parfait!).

The BBS Message Board:
Dr. JoAnn Deak will be running our next Parent Workshop on February 24, 2006. Dr. Deak has spent over twenty years as a school psychologist and educator helping organizations, schools, and parents establish healthy environments for children.

At Bromley Brook, we Celebrate Today with Hope for the Future. We understand the genetic and social programming of girls and are fully committed to helping girls find their own true voice.
