counseling

Upon enrollment, the student is assigned to an individual counselor. The counselor works with the student and her family to set emotional and family goals during her stay at Bromley Brook School. The counselor also arranges weekly phone calls home and maintains contact with educational consultants, if applicable.

Students meet weekly with their counselor for an individual therapy session, and, in addition, participate in one to two therapy groups each week. The therapy groups are focused on self-awareness and positive change covering topic areas such as anxiety management, problem-solving, effective communication, family matters, relationships, and transitions. Students first participate in the Orientation Group for approximately 6-8 weeks, as a way to connect with other new girls and to support their adjustment to the program. They will then be assigned to a focused therapy group or groups. The therapy groups run for the length of a full trimester.

Family meetings and conference calls are scheduled as therapeutically recommended through the student's counselor. On-site, family sessions are strongly encouraged prior to a planned, local visitation. Periodic family meetings are important to review expectations and plans for a visitation, to process issues of concern, and to work toward the student's successful transition upon completion of the Bromley Brook program.

Parents as Partners
The faculty at Bromley Brook School is committed to helping students achieve success through academics, self-awareness, and community life. An Individualized Learning Plans is completed for each student and serves as the framework for change as a student progresses through the program.

In addition, a comprehensive progress report is completed monthly for every student. Our Parent and Student Handbooks outline program expectations and policies that will support each family to formulate a strong, purposeful and healthy vision for family change. Through on-campus family workshops, family counseling sessions, and carefully planned visitations, desired outcomes can include enhanced parenting skills, improved family relationships, the establishment of clear and reasonable expectations, and successful family integration. Parents can also make use of online learning and support through the Family IQ Program.

We are most effective in encouraging the process of change when we can work collaboratively with families to deliver clear and consistent expectations. Communicating with the student in a united voice will allow her the opportunity to make the greatest strides at our school. We ask parents, therefore, to partner with us in support of their daughters. We strive to help the student strengthen her commitment to responsibility, accountability, and success. Parents can support us and their daughters in these areas by honoring therapeutic recommendations and following through consistently with school policies.

Transition Planning
When the student successfully completes the Bromley Brook program and moves on to the next stage of her life, she does so with increased confidence and stability. We focus on developing a coherent transition plan, so that both parents and the student will be aware of the resources to maintain progress and to encourage future gains.

Upon enrollment, we initially assure a smooth transition by communicating with the student's former providers to honor the work that she has already completed. We then build in transition pieces throughout our program such as increased privileges, skill-building, leadership and mentoring practice, community service, and internships. We also help families practice being together successfully during visitations through the use of family and behavioral contracts and follow-up processing sessions.

And finally, in collaboration with the student, her family, the school faculty, educational consultants, and community providers, we work to address pertinent transition issues upon program completion, such as school or college planning, ongoing therapy, community self-help involvement, extracurricular activities, community service opportunities, and spirituality supports. Prior to program completion, we also encourage a transition meeting arranged through the student's counselor to review issues relevant to the transition plan.
